Great literature

After discovering a wonderful website Gutenberg.org I have opened my mind to literature from the olden days. Downtime at work has generally consisted of Open University reading which is great but sometimes you just need to do something a little different. Generally I would not read books that were written so far back, usually sticking with Harry Potter and Patricia Cornwell etc…. However after finding this website I decided to expand my reading tastes.

George Orwell – Nineteen Eighty-Four – This is a truly fantastic book with a great story. I am aware that there are underlying themes about repression however to just take this book on face value it is wonderful read. I was however expecting a Hollywood style ending and was left a little ‘depressed’ as although it was a fantastic ending, it doesn’t lead to my idea of happiness.

George Orwell – Animal Farm – This is a short book and only took two days to finish. It’s a great story line all about animals, once again I know it has underlying themes but it was an interesting view on life without the Hollywood ending.

I am going to start the Great Gatsby next although my stepfather suggested Grapes of Wrath which is about the great depression however I was unable to find this so the Great Gatsby it shall be.

Back to OU:

I am currently reading the first chapter in the Research Methods book on thematic analysis which is making it all seem a little less daunting. I believe that if I keep this systematic then I should be okay. I have already watch the Chloe interview through once and printed off the transcription so the next job is to watch it again and create a coding system. Little steps will freak me out a little less.

DSE212 TMA04 is due Wednesday. I will be staying in on Monday night and will play with it on my day off on Tuesday ready for submission. I am going to dictate it all using Windows Speech Recognition so fingers crossed it works pretty well. I plan to spend a fair bit of the weekend training the software which I know will be mind numbingly dull but rather vital. I am really excited by the whole prospect of WSR.

SD226 TMA05 is still a few weeks off so I want DSE212 TMA04 out of the way before I get going.

I plan to create a step by step guide to thematic analysis on here once I’ve got my head around it which I will be able to reuse throughout my OU studies and beyond.

Dictation software for FWEEEEEE

It’s been an interesting time of late.

In terms of OU study, I am seeing the deadline for DSE212 TMA04 draw closer and I have no more on paper than I had but not feeling too pressured as I pretty much know what I want to write about. After my first Elluminate tutorial it has been suggested that the tutors want to read a story rather than a repeat of what is in the material so a story is what they will get from me. Comparing and contrasting in this essay is a challenge because very little research has been undertaken from an insider point of view but on the plus side it makes it easier as to which side I shall stand.

Elluminate is mildly amusing. Everyone appears to fight to get their voice heard and forget to switch microphones off which cause interference. Was a very good tutorial on how to attack assignments critically although I wish this had happened in DD101 as I am on my 3rd module which seems a little late in the day.

I have decided that March 12th is the night that I will stay in with wine to blitz DSE212 TMA04, as mentioned many times already, I already have a backbone to work from so it shouldn’t take forever.

SD226 TMA01 will be undertaken just after DSE212 TMA01, I have some ideas with this so I will play then a few days before it’s due I will blitz it in a few nights.

I am already dreading DSE212 TMA05 and I haven’t even started it, I struggle with thematic analysis but think I really just need to get my head around it.

Work has been pretty cool, I hit target in February and this month is looking rather prosperous again.

In reference to the title: I have been tempted towards purchasing dictation software as my fingers have started to go a little funny after a major session. I really didn’t want to spend out in excess of £90 so have been looking for a cheaper way of doing it. Today I have been pointed to the fact that Windows 7 has an inbuilt dictation package!!! If this works well then I am on to a winner. Have ordered microphone headset from Amazon for under £10. To access this tool, go to the start button on windows and go to help and support then type ‘speech recognition’. Bingo. Happy chatting.

Progression on SD226

Still a little deflated after DSE212 TMA03 result so really need to pick myself up and get going again. Roughly 2 weeks till TMA04 is due but with a decent backbone to work from, I am not feeling too rushed.

A very quiet day at work yesterday lead to me reading and highlighting up to Chapter 3 in Book 4 for SD226. Although the disorders are interesting, a lot of the info is flying straight over my head. I am hoping that by reading and highlighting, I am encoding something in to my memory which allows a base in which to build up on. SD226 does not have an exam so I don’t have anything to revise for but I would really like to finish this course with a good understanding of the material.

SD226 TMA01 is due at the end of March and I am constantly thinking about subcortical structures and pathways, I think I know how I want to argue this and have thought of a wonderful conclusion (well, I think that it is) so now I just need to really get to grips with it.

DSE212 TMA05 is already filling me with dread but really need to sit down in peace and quiet and make notes on the instructions.

On a final note I have discovered a site called Gutenberg.org which has ebooks which are no longer copyrighted. No more boredom at work. I am currently reading 1984 which seems pretty good. Engrossed already after less than a chapter.

The sun is starting to shine again

SD226 and DSE212 are on the back burner until March 1st. This is in part due to work and partly due to needing a mental break.

Results back from DSE212 TMA03 were nowhere near what I wanted but it was due to something completely stupid on my part therefore I knew the material but went off on a major tangent. Going to have to do some major catch up on order get the overall grade that I want.

SD226 is blowing my brain a little but I appear to understand the over all picture which surprises me somewhat.

In fact whilst it’s quiet here at work this afternoon, I may just go grab my SD226 book 4 (or 5, I’ve lost count) and get on with a little reading and highlighting until a customer appears.

On another completely different note, it appears that Mattell are releasing the ‘Hoverboard’ from the Back to the Future series. Before any anti-gravity nerds start disbelieving this, apparently it looks identical but won’t actually work!!! I don’t care, I just want one. MUM!!!!!!

DSE212 & SD226 – Progress so far

SD226 is now starting to come together in my mind, I think they are rather cruel with hitting you with the contents of Book 1 to start with as it looks harsh but actually the way in which the other books are written actually give some great examples which really help with getting your head round this stuff.

My progress so far:

SD226:

Book 1 – Read and Highlighted – heavy going and biggest book

Book 2 – Bypassed at this point, mainly because I am pretty good with research methods after having it rammed down my throat in both ED209 and currently in DSE212 (especially as TMA03 is an experimental project)

Book 3 – Chapter 1 & 2 read and highlighted, on to chapter 3 tonight to get it finished.

Book 4 & 5 – Coming to Rome with me for the flights each way, I think I should be able to get at least 1 book complete maybe both (they are getting thinner and at 8.50 Euro a pint in the hotel, I doubt I’ll be drinking too much)

I know this sounds like I am running away with myself on SD226 but it really isn’t the case. I find that by getting all the reading and highlighting out of the way early I can encode enough of it to make it far easier when I read it through again for each TMA and any revision (obviously not SD226 as no exam)

TMA01 – I now have reasonable drafts for Questions 1 & 2. Question 3 perplexed me for a while but consolidation is a wonderful thing and I’ve got my head round the basic. Automatic processing (attention, just done in DSE212), cortex of brain (the wrinkly thing that everyone knows as the brain, sub cortical structures is the bit inside the wrinkly thing. Pretty much like a cell with cell membrane on the outside with smaller bits inside that control it. Bypassing cortex in automatic processing is what the assignment is about so now time to go over the chapter again and break down where the cortex is used in automatic processing and where it isn’t Simplez.

DSE212

TMA03 – Complete and submitted

TMA04 – 902 words written this morning whilst work was quiet, this sounds like quite a feat however I have be mulling it over for days now and it was just a case of putting pen to paper (or in this case, fingers to keyboard) and having a 30 minute ramble which acts like free-association writing to me, I don’t bother with an introduction (this can always be one of the last things written), I just start with something that is salient in my mind and ramble, as I go alaong other things come to mind so I just keep writing. I will leave this alone for a few days then come back to it and re-organise after I have re-read the text associated. I will then create the bottle neck essay, add an intro, conclusion, reference and cite then I will realise that I have gone over the word count and curse myself!!! Welcome to my world of essay writing.

DSE212 TMA04 – Notes

This post is going to be a bit of a ramble in case you hadn’t already realised, so time to sit down with a cup of tea.

Once again, it’s been another quiet day at work which has given me time to start taking notes on Chapter 8 – memory in preparation for TMA04. The question appears to be pretty straight forward but I need to make sure that I am being critical enough whilst still answering the question which is not my strongest point. My notes take the format of the area of study, relevant research, Type of study, Insider/Outsider point of view, criticism, support. So far there are a fair few pages but hopefully it will help me construct what I actually want to put in my essay. I really need to get this one done pretty quickly so that I can really get to grips with SD226 TMA01 which is due pretty soon afterwards.

DSE212 TMA05 is already looking like it is going to be tough going but after a few times of reading the relevant material in Research Methods book, it does appear to be rather helpful. After watch both parts of the DVD on each character, I do think that we’ve been given the easier one to analyse as she is quite open and she does talk a lot about attachments in her life. I think I am just going to use the coding that the Research Methods book uses as an example as it seems to work pretty well.

Day off tomorrow which means I can press on with the notes for TMA05 then print them off and decide what I want to include which will answer the question, there is a fair bit of stuff that seems interesting but the guide suggests certain sections. The study guide for week 18 seems pretty invaluable for this TMA so will read that over a few times.

A friend of mine (12 years younger) has decided that she wants to do a BSc (Hon) Nursing (Mental Health) as she already works as support staff in a local youth metal health hospital. She never did GCSEs and A-Levels so requires an Access course for HE in nursing before she can start. The access course is about £1,000 but the Nursing degree is free. The only down side is that she has been used to earning pretty decent money and although her work will support her and offer her a job at the end, she is going to have to cut back quite a bit. I only really mention this because I am starting to realise how many people are going in to further education later in life.

I have really started to investigate my MSc options as it isn’t something to be taken lightly. Firstly, although there is some funding out there on some courses, it isn’t going to cover any living expenses and I’m starting to wonder if I am better doing it part-time over 2 years, after all, it is only 1 more year in the grand scheme of things and it means my finances won’t be so badly hurt. I don’t have to stay within the car industry once I have the BSc (Hon) Psychology, it will allow me to step out and do something more relevant (hopefully) but to heave myself up any career ladders, I think that the MSc will be rather valuable especially as I am no longer any sort of spring chicken and will be getting close to the big 4 0 by the time this is all done and dusted.

My CV is another bone of contention which I need to start putting together, I still have time to fill in training gaps that I find if I get on with it fairly soon.

Ramble over else I will be going in to the finer points of Dexter and 90210.

DSE212 TMA03 Complete

I was thinking that this TMA was going to take a bit longer to complete but it is amazing how much you can get done in peace and quiet when you put your mind to it. I have submitted it too with the data set and SPSS output as requested so I'm fairly happy. I am going to go over it again at work tomorrow as I still have till lunch time on Wednesday for the official deadline.

1,992 words to be exact, discussion was over the word limit but results were nowhere close. 9 pages when double spaced.

This assignment has taught me how to zip a file, I know it's easy to all those who know about it but I was green to this concept.

t-tests are now a lot less daunting after this.

Now on to DSE212 TMA04 (have notes) and SD226 TMA01 (have Questions 1 & 2 written but question 3 looks like a pig)

SD226 TMA01 & DSE212 TMA03: Update

DSE212 TMA03 is due Wednesday and although I have the bulk of it, I need to put it all together, print it, then tear it to shreds before re-building so I am staying home tonight rather than spending it with the other half. My other half is very good about my studies but I can’t expect him to sit in silence whilst I get on with it next to him. If I can blitz it tonight then I’ll be back to his on Tuesday night. I think a few glasses of wine should help me get through this tonight and pull an all-nighter. The only down side is that I have a review at work tomorrow and should probably be preparing for that however maybe it just shows where my priorities actually lie.

SD226 TMA01: It’s amazing that when you read something over a few times it becomes less daunting. I have the bulk of TMA01 written (ink) so it was nowhere near as bad as I initially thought however Question 3 is proving to be problematic unless I am missing something completely. After reading, re-reading, making notes and re-reading again, I can’t quite work out how I am going to construct an argument based on the question. There appears to only be a small section on subcortical structures but the questions asks for 4/5 points to argue on. I must be missing something drastic but I’m not going to worry too much quite yet as it’s not due for quite a while.

My progress on SD226 is good, Book 1 has been completed and although it initially gave me headaches with the amount of biological depth, it appears that it is just to give you a grounding to work from. Book 2 is purely a statistics book which I have bypassed for the time being, it is all still very fresh in my mind so will only refer to it when needed. Book 3 chapter 1 is tiny so have swept through that and am now on to Book 3 Chapter 2 which is once again very biologically scientific but luckily is revision to some extent after doing A-level Biology years ago. One study I have found whilst doing this degree suggests that information you learn is always with you and you just need to find a way of drawing it out of your memory – I am starting to find this to be the case.

Once DSE212 TMA03 is out of the way, it will be time to press on with TMA04 which I have already managed to put some notes together for. A whole essay on memory seems very fitting at the moment.

I already know that I am going to want a fair bit of time on DSE212 TMA05 which is Thematic Analysis and it isn’t a strong point of mine however I think it might be something that will raise it’s ugly head in my future career so I really need to be more positive about it rather than panicking already. The positive is that the Research Methods book for DSE212 is fantastic and has examples so I will definitely be clinging on to that book for the rest of my life (have already saved a pdf copy to every storage device that I have).

Due to an issue with my window ledge (book shelf) I have had to remove my books and stack them up next to my bed. I hadn’t really realised till now as to how much I have read to date on the 4 modules worth of books in that pile. It really adds up and makes you a little warm and fuzzy with pride.

SD226 TMA01 – Question 1 complete

Work has been rather quiet and flippin’ freezing so I thought a little mental exercise might counteract the cold and boredom. I have managed to complete Question 1 for SD226 TMA01 as it wasn’t too taxing and makes me feel like I have actually achieved something today.

1a) Printed off the word copy, made the text larger and double spaced. It now has circles with comments for each sentence. My advice with this is to take it one sentence at a time and tear it to shreds.

1b) Get your head around what the question asks, make notes from the text (there isn’t a lot to learn) and write 200 words but not making the same mistakes as the student in question 1a. This should be a breeze on the basis that I doubt SD226 should be the first level 2 course to be tackled.

Question 2 will follow when I’ve got that far.

After reading through SD226 TMA01 a few times and ‘sleeping on it’, I feel a little more positive about getting it done, especially as it is in bits rather than a 2000 word eassy.

DSE212 TMA03: Update - The deadline draws near

Hmmm….

….. DSE212 TMA03 is due next Wednesday and it is still very much a work in progress. I suspect there is at least 3-5 hours of work to polish it so I really need to get a move on.

The work rota for February has finally appeared and it looks like I’ll be working 1 in 3 Sundays which is my day in the week that I can blitz school work and really has worked for me in the past so I’m not dreading it as such.

Want to get TMA03 finished before Monday so that I can get a move on with TMA04. SD226 looks like it is going to be toughie so am going to need to spend extra time doing these ones, at least there is a fair bit of time between each TMA.

I am not looking forward to DSE212 TMA05 as I’m not great with Thematic Analysis so will need extra time there too.

DSE212 TMA03 Update

Today has been a very lazy day off. I got up stupidly late when the plan was to get a grip on TMA03 however with the other half working till 8pm tonight, I still had plenty of time. I have the following completed: Title, Introduction, Design, Participants, apparatus, appendix, references. Still to complete are: Abstract, results and discussion so I feel I have really got far today. I still managed to catch up on the last 2 90210 that have appeared on Project Free TV.

Last night I had a 'video' blitz. I find that I don't watch the DVDs that come with the courses so I made the effort and got up to date with DSE212 video stuff, some interesting, some dull but at least it's done.

Going to hit the first SD226 DVD right now then off to other half to watch random stuff on Netflix.

I still haven't got my head around how you know if your t-test is significant or not!!! Going to ask a friend.

A Step Further

Writing this blog is definitely for my own benefit rather than anyone else’s. It give me the motivation to drive further when ‘laziness’ rears it’s ugly head and it gives me somewhere to ramble about things that interest me but probably nobody else.

I managed to complete chapter 3 of Book 1 for SD226 however I am pretty sure that I am not taking much in. Even though this course does not have an exam (which generally gives rise to understanding only what is required for each TMA) I think I am actually going to have to re-read all the biology bits in order to get it in to my head. Might try to find an interactive website to play with at work.

Yesterday at work proved to be a little dull and this morning is not looking much different so I think that I have enough information for the following for DSE212 TMA03:

Title – Written, not great but at least I have something to work with. I quite fancied something witty but I think I will stick with something to the point.

Abstract – Not written but the rule of experiment write up suggests this will flow when everything else has been completed.

Introduction – I have enough information to put in to this and the Research Methods book is fantastic enough to give me some structure.
(Basic structure: Discuss attention? – Discuss automatic processing – Discuss Stroop effect – Discuss the experiment. This is all in the Research Methods book anyway)

Results – I know that I need SD, Mean, Median and a t-test. A case of messing with SPSS tomorrow (day off) to complete these parts. I haven’t as of yet worked out how to create a double bar chart but I’m sure it won’t be rocket science.

Discussion – Discuss my findings with regards to previous and talk about limitations etc. This is in rough draft form so far so shouldn’t be too hard.

References: Hmmmm, 2 books.

Appendix – The biggest pain in the butt (at least I think so). Consists of: SPSS results sheet (I think that should be easy to attach), Consent forms (Annoying as I think each one will need to be scanned and somehow attached to the final TMA file. Stimuli (Hoping this shouldn’t be too hard)

BINGO – Simplz!!! Yeah yeah, I’m very thankful that my job has serious down time!!!

SD226 TMA01 – I need to print off the instructions and bed it in to my mind, not even going to touch on this for a few weeks – Not due till March 28th

DSE212 TMA04 – Due March 14th so I will jump on to this as soon as TMA03 is complete. It is pretty straight forward, another essay focussing on Memory Research (I’m choosing option B).

Films:

Blitz – Picked randomly to watch and it was pretty darn good. Based in London around a cop serial killer who’s hunted by Jason Staham (Aggressive issues). All actors very good. Rated 18 (language)

West is West – Follow up to East is East. Very good, the young lad Saj steals the show. Bit more serious in places that the first one but it still has some great comedy moments. Supposedly filmed in Pakistan however Wiki suggests it was actually India.

Day off tomorrow so my day will be: 90210 catch up, New Girl catch up, DSE TMA03!!!!

Interlude -

I am suspecting that the thought of another TMA involving experiments and seeing the first TMA for SD226 has freaked me because I haven’t picked up a book in a week! I’m not totally losing it because I am ahead of the game already but I REALLY need to get a move on with SPSS. It is looking like a t-test is the only test required for the TMA so I can cope with that. Wednesday is my day off this week so I am hiding away with junk food and numerous cups of tea so that I can press on and get this darn thing written.

Punters at work are short on the ground and I don’t think that target is going to be reached but all in all it is going well and fingers crossed I may actually stay here until it’s time to go to a real brick uni for the MSc.

During a quiet patch at work and a frustration with the online training for Microsoft Access, I discovered a site which allows you do complete practice S.A.T.S for US colleges (I do mean that I was very bored). I would be eligible for Ivy League based on my scores however £30k per year and 14 years too late changes that.

The Bridge – A film documentary about people who have jumped from Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco in a 12 month period. The other half and I clicked on it (Netflix) to watch the first 5 minutes (just to see what the score was) and were engrossed for the whole film. Very well written and very well presented although we were amused by a mother and daughter describing their daughter/sisters departure over the bridge in which the daughter rambled away with mother constantly correcting her and generally getting annoyed. I would rate this film (Yes, you will actually see people jump), it is not tasteless in any way, it is rather respectful.

Super High Me – Great concept, interesting results. Neither of us were a big fan of the guy doing it. He is a stand up comic in America who neither of us would ever go to see due to his monotone voice and he wasn’t very funny HOWEVER by the audience reactions, he appeals to someone.

Tonight we are thinking of starting the trilogy of The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo. Everyone raves about it and it’s worth a go.

SD226 - 30 points!!!

After a rather hectic morning at work, I logged on to student home to find that SD226 is ready and raring to go. I did my usual think of looking at the calendar, checking around the site and then I made the fateful mistake of looking at the TMAs….. I really wish I hadn’t.

I can’t believe that SD226 is only worth 30 points. The TMAs appear to be longer than any of the other modules I have done which have been 60 points. It is a 33 week course, has 6 books, 3 TMAs and an ECA (I am now dreading that and it’s months away). The only saving grace is that there is a few month gap between each of the first 3 TMAs. I am so glad that I didn’t try to combine it with ED209 or any level 3 module. DSE212 is proving to be a nice course although I really need to get going properly on TMA03 especially as I think I should be making a real start of SD226 TMA01. I think I am actually going to book some time off work so that I can have a blitz. I am ahead of myself on both courses but I want the TMAs done quickly.

Here’s hoping.

SD226 Materials Arrive

SD226 materials have arrived and I am surprised as to how much there is considering it’s a 30 point course. After reading reviews on the course I was expecting the work load to be higher than expected but maybe 6 books of complex information was more than expected. I am very glad that I did A-level Biology, and I’m surprised how much of it I appear to have retained.

On the basis that I have finished all the required reading for DSE212 therefore I really just have to get the assignments done, do the SPSS work and revise for June’s exam. I have started reading and highlighting Book 1 and would like to be done with Chapter 1 today. The only saving grace is that there is no exam to revise for therefore it is a case of understanding rather than memorising. So far I think that I am very interested in biological perspectives in Psychology which should be half the battle.

The other half and I are babysitting again tonight for his neice and nephew. We are now requested by the kids and we don’t mind too much. I would like to have got a little study done tonight which doesn’t happen with a hyper 8 year old but I have tomorrow. I really want to make a dent in DSE212 TMA03 next week and get the discussion done and the data in SPSS. I think it’s going to be fairly possible as I have Wednesday off and nothing better to do. I’m also planning to have got at least 2 chapters from SD226 Book 1 out of the way as I can pick this up as and when and can get bits done at work during quiet time.

Discovered yesterday that on March 27th I can register for either DD303 or DD307 for next year which has given me a jolt. I can’t believe that I am talking about level 3 courses already. I honestly have no idea which to do first. My logical brain is suggesting DD303 but only because it is a lower number than DD307 which makes me wonder if it’s marginally easier to begin with.

Oh well on to more SD226 rather than gassing about rubbish on here.

DSE212 TMA02 Submitted

I had today off so finished up my TMA03 and submitted it. I only had today and Sunday off to get it finished in time so thought today was the better option especially as the distraction that is the other half is working so had total peace and quiet. Tea and a Terry's Chocolate orange got me through. I enjoyed the biological psychology bit but Question 3 of part 2 was more long winded than predicted. Oh well, in 2 or so weeks time I will know how I did!!!

When I started this course I was so excited about results coming back and I'd have the date in my diary and be checking like a stalker. It bothers me less now, it's all about getting the assignments done.

SD226 books leave the OU tomorrow so I should have them by the weekend. This is still exciting but it also gives me the initial feeling of over stretching myself to bring this in to 4 years whilst working full time and having a slightly crazy social life. I appear to be coping which amazes me more.

Bought ink cartridges for the fountain pen today, I love it!!! Been using it for everything and all the draw backs of past fountain pens don't appear to be there!! It doesn't leak and it doesn't take a whole day for the ink to dry. Think that I am going to start a new trend for the re-marketing of the fountain pen.

Off to darts tonight, honestly I'd rather stay in and make a start on TMA03 but sacrifices are made to keep my little angel happy.

2012 2012 2012 2012 2012

Happy New Year!!!

Well 2012 is upon us and the papers talk of doom and gloom but I am optimistic for the year ahead. I have plans in mind.

By the end of this year I am hoping to have achieved the following:

• 5 nights in New York with my dearest.
• Moving in with my dearest
• DSE212 completed
• SD226 completed
• DXR222 completed
• The combination of the 3 above mean that I am over half way through this degree which is a major achievement and will be celebrated in true Champagne style.
• A weekend in a Yurt (xmas present)
• 5 nights in Rome (I’m actually going there for Valentines on business but to go with my partner would be the actual aim)

I don’t think anything above is going to be too taxing so highly achievable. I was going to add the purchase of a 3D TV but that might be pushing it.

Working today so doing my usual thing of reading and highlighting OU texts. I am actually on Book 2 Chapter 3 – Sex and Gender so I have pretty much almost finished the readings for DSE212 which is well ahead of time but I really need to kick on with SPSS workings so I will hit that in one go. SD226 is just around the corner and I am oddly excited by the prospect because I have really enjoyed the Biological Perspective to date.

Revision for DSE212 seems so little compared to ED209 with only 7 chapters to revise along with those Key Terms. I think I only have to revise one topic from Book 2 which will be Sex and Gender.

DSE212 TMA02 due on January 11th. Option B is the chosen Essay and I think I need about 2 more hours on it to get it ready to be submitted. Haven’t really said too much on Neurones apart from how drugs work on them but it seems pretty fluid. The methodology stuff is pretty simple so fingers crossed. Then on to TMA03 which is a quantitative report (oh joy).

Post xmas update

I have really fallen behind with my blogging so thought that a worthwhile update was in order.

Xmas day was the usual family day of trying to be civil and in the most part it was pretty successful. The other half arrived at 8pm which made the evening bearable.

Yesterday was our 6 month anniversary and all seems to be going very well. There is talk of moving in together and he is not adverse to 12 months in Huddersfield when it comes time for my MSc.

New Job (I know.....again) is going swimmingly and appears to have been a very wise move. I love that someties great things happen when you think that you have screwed something up royally.

DSE212 is in full flow with the first TMA submitted and a staisfying result. TMA02 is due 11th January and I am around 75% through it. Just really need to make English out of the Essay and finish the research questions. I have had a spluge on reading and have almost finished reading and highlighting Book 2 Chapter 3 hich is way ahead of where I really need to be but it is interesting.

Revision topics for DSE212 appear to be a breeze compared to ED209 with only 7 testable chapters and in a real world, you could get away with 4 safely unless I have not read this all properly along with key terms. I have started to plan revision ready for June 11th exam. I get ahead because I know I go through periods of 'can't be naffed'.

For xmas my mother bought me David Canter's text on Investigative Psychology which I strongly suspect to be the first text in the MSc course and therefore at some point very soon I will start reading and highlighting and at £25 a pop, they aren't cheap.

Xmas Presents:

Superdry hoodie, Just Business by Geraint Anderson AKA Cityboy (already finished and pretty good although prefered his first), Binge Trading by Seth Freedman (Started well but got left in the pub the other day so need to go find it), Fountain pen (love this, been thinking for ages about going back to the old skool ways), HDMI cable and a night in a Yat in York.

SD226 starts in February so need to press on.

Shock, Horror......... an update

Ok, ok. I know I've been a little distant from this blog but have now been 'in a relationship' for 3 months (tommorrow actually) and I'm enjoying it. I will get bcak to this properly very shortly with loads of proper updates. Reflections on DD101 is still required along with other updates with regards to my OU path and others.

NEWS IN BRIEF:

DD101 - Passed

ED209 - Exam on 18th October. Actually have started revision and so far am pretty competent with: Temperament, Peer & Sibling, Gender and First Relationships. I am planning on another 6 to make 10 chapters in all. Seen question should be okay, have my bits from the chapter that I'm using and also the papers that I am pulling from.

DSE212 - Starts next weekend, books are all here and website is open. Looks pretty simple in relation to ED209. Folks, do DSE212 before ED209!!!!

SD226 - No books but registered for February.

DZR222 - the one with residential course. Signed up and going to Bath on 28th July for the week.

DSE232 - Signed up for this starting October next year I think but not really worrying about it quite yet.

Have taken October 10th off for 4 days to cram revise. Notes for the 10 topics will be in place so just need to read and play with them to 'actively' remember. Thinking that minor theorists are going to be tough to remember. I hope that 10 are enough..... if not I've been stupid.

The 10 - Temperament, Siblings and Peers, Gender, First Relationships, Origins of Development, Attachment, Disturbed and Disturbing, Young Consumers, National Identity and another one that I haven't decided on as of yet. After looking at the last 4 years papers, it is evident that these topics come up a lot with others scoring 0, and as I am well aware that I will never remember 14 topics, I am reducing this. My focus will be on temperament and Siblings and Peers as I have high hopes for them.

Off out with the boy tonight as per normal but he's good with my degree stuff as long as he gets his feet rubbed............ easy. LOL

A day of dread

Ar 6.10pm today I will be resigning from my position here which means that I should be let go of on the spot for going to work for the competitor however byu the looks of it, there will only be 1 person left here tomorrow so wondering about the outcome. Am prepped and ready to be gone tonight, stepdad is preped to come collect me once the deed is done.

If the above goes to plan then it means that I will have 2 days without a car and therefore I have 2 days to blitz ED209 TMA03 (due next Tuesday (that crept up on me)) and DD101 TMA07. I am ready to see the end of DD101 now, I have really enjoyed it but now starting to see the workload involved in running 2 60 point modules together although I am doing the same again at the end of this year with SD226 & DSE212 however with no exam for SD226, I think that I might be okay.

I am stacking it about resigning today but my work buddy is going to stay with me till I've done it.
